Why get a doula?
People have recommended that I hire a doula...is it really necessary?
In the end, it's up to you if you want to follow through on the recommendations. Studies show that women who utilize the continuous and informative support doulas offer have significantly less risk of an undesired c-section, higher APGAR scores for baby immediately after birth, and an overall better experience with the birthing process. We're not just a friendly face, although that, too, goes a long way!
Doulas provide support for moms and their partners throughout the journey of their pregnancy and growing family, education, resources, physical and emotional comfort and more.
Sometimes the whole process can get a little overwhelming. We're here to help sort it out and help you make the best decisions for you.
I personally recommend that you interview multiple doulas before making a final decision. Feelings of comfortability and safety are incredibly important for allowing your body to relax and efficiently labor.
What should I ask at the interview?
Here are some suggested questions to ask as you look for your doula:
What is your experience with doula work, and why do you do what you do?
What all is included in your services?
What does support look like during the labor process?
Do you provide/what is your experience with (specific service or birth philosophy)?
What is your experience providing support for (cultural/ethnic/religious value, etc.)?
What is your experience with difficult or disappointing labors? How did you provide support?
How do you help (birthing partner) participate in the birth journey?
What would happen if you were unavailable to attend my birth?
